What is Yoga for Your Home?

Can we create an influence in our home that supports the goals of our yoga practice? The Vedic tradition can teach us how. Our homes should nourish and harmonize withour physiology. After all, they’re an extension of it. This is the essence of Vastu homedesign—a science that aligns our living spaces with the natural world to enhancewellbeing. How can they nourish and harmonize with our body? Our physiology is controlled by ourbrain, and brain activity is affected by the direction one faces. Several studies haveestablished that neurons of the thalamus, deep in the brain, communicate differentlywhen one faces different directions. The thalamus is the real mind-bodyconnection—the intermediary between the higher brain and the body, as well as thecontroller of our limbic system, which regulates aging, growth, and response to stress. This principle is foundational to Vastu building design, where orientation plays a criticalrole. This is why there is a best direction to face when doing yoga/meditation/prayer as wellas working, or sleeping, and all our most routine activities. Published researchdemonstrates that the direction in which we sleep correlates with our incidence ofdepression and anxiety. The best direction to face is top of the head to the east, thedirection of the rising sun, the direction the surface of the earth is traveling, the directionfrom which the celestial forces approach us every day. In Vastu design, aligningourselves with this eastward influence optimizes our mental and physical health.Because the house is an extension of our body, the orientation of our home orapartment building affects our mind and body. Again, east is best, and the ancient Vedictexts say that south is the worst—it is associated with all negative influences, withproblems and suffering. Studies validate that those who live in south-facing homes haveworse mental health, are more likely to be under the care of a cardiologist and are evenless prosperous. We want the physiology of our homes to resonate with the physiologyof Planet Earth to avoid these damaging influences. Even east light in our homes—fromeast-facing windows—improves our health, a key feature of Vastu architecture.Everyone experiences that the sun generates different energies at different times of theday. Yoga for the home, rooted in Vastu home design, tells us to lay out our home orapartment so that the different energies of the sun correspond to the primary function ofeach room. Then natural law will support our activity. In other words, there is a bestplace in the home for cooking, which is best done in the southeast where thetransformative power of the metabolizing process is greatest. We benefit from meditating and doing hatha yoga in the northeast, where the power of transcendencewill enhance our practice. When we live in such a home, designed with Vastu house design principles, we live inharmony with natural law on a deep structural level, and the result is an influence ofgood physical health, happiness, family harmony, success in our actions, and growth toenlightenment.I’m an architect who has been practicing yoga and meditation daily for most of my life,so it was inevitable that I would spend years searching for the connection betweenbuilding design and the inner peace that yoga cultivates. I discovered the connectionwhen I learned that the Indian sage Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was reviving the ancientsystem of Veda-based architecture, which we know now as Maharishi Vastu®architecture. (Vastu is a Sanskrit term that refers to the qualities of balance andcoherence that are maintained in the structures of nature.) I’ve been studying andpracticing this system for twenty-five years, and I’ve found that the Vedic texts give uspowerful guidance to create yoga for our homes through the science of Vastuarchitecture.By far the most powerful effects are gained by building a new home that incorporates allthe principles I’ve outlined above, and many more. We’ve had hundreds of clients now,and yes, they have the wonderful experiences that the Vedic literature predicts withVastu-compliant architecture. But the most universal comment that families who live in Maharishi Vastu homes makeis that they feel more at home in their new home than they ever felt in a home before. Ithink what causes this experience is that a Vastu home is an expression of the samedeep levels of natural law that organize human physiology—Vastu really is yoga for thehome, achieved through Vastu home design.People often ask me what can be done to integrate the effects of Vedic architecture intoan existing home or apartment. We can only experience the full effects from a housedesigned for Vastu from the ground up, but if an existing house faces one of thecardinal directions, anyone can do a few valuable things: Sleep with your head (pillow) to the east or south. Use only the east or north doors to enter the building. Do yoga and meditation in the northeast. Sit facing east or north for work or study. What I’ve found is that by far the best is to live and practice yoga in a home orapartment building that was built according to the holistic approach of Maharishi Vastu, which harmonizes all the inner and outer energies. This creates an influence of peace, health, happiness, and enlightenment—the fulfillment of yoga—through Vastu principlesfor home design.Reference:Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is best known for bringing the Transcendental Meditationtechnique (TM) to the West, and more recently as the inspiration behind the DavidLynch Foundation. It is less well known that starting in 1960 he taught hatha yoga tomany of those who learned TM, and through his programs hundreds of thousands in theUS have learned yoga. Subsequently, he brought the holistic, natural healthcare systemAyurveda to the West, and in the 1990s introduced Sthapatya Veda or Vastu to theWest. Roughly $500,000,000 in Maharishi Vastu homes and larger buildings have beenbuilt in the US using Vastu architecture. Maharishi Vastu Architecture

Maharishi Vastu® Architecture The ancient Vedic texts of Manasara and Mayamata explain in detail how influencescan be designed and constructed into a building to improve our quality of life. Thisknowledge is known in Sanskrit as Sthapatya Veda, which translates literally as “theknowledge of establishment,” and is translated poetically as “the architecture of nature.”When the technologies that derive from this ancient science are applied to the designand construction of buildings and cities, it is known as Vastu. As with the ancientscience of Ayurveda, Maharishi organized a research project beginning in the 1980sand spanning almost 20 years to reconstruct the technology of Vastu, such that it wouldfaithfully reflect this ancient science. His restoration of this subject, as with MaharishiAyurveda, is identified with his name — thus the term “Maharishi Vastu ®” architecture. To date, over $500 million in new building construction has been accomplished usingMaharishi Vastu architecture, with inhabitants reporting improved quality of life, a feelingof peacefulness and greater family harmony as chief results. This system of Vastu architecture derives in part from the most basic characteristics ofour planet: the Earth is a sphere rotating from west to east on an axis that passesthrough the North and South Poles. The axial rotation of our planet causes all celestialobjects to pass overhead from east to west. Therefore, the influences of the Sun andvirtually all other celestial bodies come at us from the east. From this simpleobservation, Maharishi Vastu identifies six key elements relevant to building orientation, furniture and room placement, architecture, and city planning, making it an idealframework for Vastu home design: eastern light, especially around the time of sunrise. Ample windows on the eastof a building — a key aspect of Vastu house design — expose the occupants tothe day’s early light as much as possible. Here is the reference to the study: F. Travis, J. Lipman, N. Parim, P. Hodak, and J.Leete, EEG Patterns and Performance when Facing the Cardinal Directions,International Journal of Psychological Studies (2021), 13:2. out of consideration. Results come from the influence of the whole rather thanfrom individual parts, making Vastu architecture a comprehensive approach fornew construction.Maharishi Vastu advises that managing the above six elements correctly in the design, construction, and siting of a building will spontaneously promote positive influences forthe occupants. Modern research to date supports this hypothesis, reinforcing the valueof Vastu house design. However, if you’re not quite ready or able to build a new home yet, and you havedetermined conclusively that your house is aligned with the cardinal directions (that is,true north-south, east, and west), then the following may be helpful tips until you canconsider building with Vastu for home design: Sleep with your head to the east (or south if health is delicate). Use ONLY doors that open to cardinal east or north. Increase access to natural light, especially eastern light. The northeast corner of your home should be a quiet place to support more self-referral experience through your daily practice of yoga, meditation, or prayer. Favor natural, non-toxic materials within your home. Avoid chemicalcontaminants, plastics, and synthetics. The Ceremonies of Maharishi Vastu Construction The first milestone, Bhumi Khanaman, or breaking the ground, is a pivotal moment inVastu house design. The owner initiates the first movement of earth on the site, symbolizing the start of construction and a commitment to steward the land responsibly. This act, guided by Vastu plans, fosters a harmonious relationship between the Vastuhome and its environment. The second stage, Shilanyas, or the foundation stone ceremony, occurs at the start ofconstruction of the foundation. This ritual, a fundamental of Vastu planning, marks thetrue beginning of construction of the building. Specific elements are placed in anauspicious location within the foundation, as dictated by Vastu plans, to establish astrong connection between the Vastu building and the earth, ensuring stability andprosperity. Finally, the Griha Pravesham, or inauguration of the new Vastu home, is a vibrantcelebration where family and friends gather to bless the completed space. Thisceremony enlivens the natural forces that support the occupants’ health, happiness, andsuccess, aligning with the principles of Vastu home design to create a nurturingenvironment. A Cape Cod Vastu Home: From Foundation to Celebration A recently constructed Maharishi Vastu home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, showcases the beauty and intention behind these ceremonies. Captured in photographsfrom its foundation stone ceremony to its inauguration, the home reflects the artistry ofits owners, builder, and design team. The completed Vastu house design embodiescore principles of Vastu planning: abundant natural materials, optimized natural lightand airflow, and refined decorative elements that create a cohesive, elegant, andcomfortable whole. The owners’ reflections on their first weeks in the Vastu home highlight thetransformative impact of Vastu home design. “The house has Being,” they shared. “It isgrounding. I sleep better. I feel more at home. I feel symmetry, an empathy with thespace. It feels alive. The energy feels good, settling. I am more creative and fulfilledbeing here.” They praised the home’s openness, with light streaming throughclerestories and carefully designed avenues, as well as its use of natural materials andgeothermal heating, which aligns with Vastu principles to minimize environmentalimpact. The surrounding walls and fences, integral to Vastu plans, provide a sense ofprotection and grounding, enhancing the sanctuary-like quality of the Vastu home. A Space That Inspires and Uplifts The owners expressed joy in how the Vastu home nurtures everyone who enters.“People who have visited are blown away by not only the beauty of the space, but alsoby the way it feels being here,” they said. The Vastu house design, which incorporatesconsiderations like reducing electromagnetic interference, fosters an environment whereplants, family, and guests thrive, a testament to thoughtful Vastu planning. The construction process deeply impacted the builders, who described the Vastu projectas a career pinnacle. They felt challenged to deliver their best work, guided by theprecision of Vastu plans. The owners hope this will not be the builders’ final Vastuproject, envisioning more homes that embody the harmony and beauty of Vastu homedesign. Celebrating the Stages of Building a Maharishi Vastu Home

The creation of a Vastu home, rooted in the ancient principles of Maharishi Vedic architecture, is a journey marked by meaningful ceremonies. Across cultures, peoplecelebrate significant construction milestones—ribbon-cutting ceremonies for newschools, groundbreaking events, or housewarming parties for new homes. In the realmof Vastu home design, three key stages of building a Maharishi Vastu house arehonored with rituals that connect the structure to the land and its inhabitants to the lawsof nature, ensuring harmony through meticulous Vastu planning. The Ceremonies of Maharishi Vastu Construction The first milestone, Bhumi Khanaman, or breaking the ground, is a pivotal moment inVastu house design.
